Durban to East London on a 50cc
Back in 1973 my oldman bought me a 50cc TS Suzuki scrambler to ride to school and back. One school holiday i decided to visit family in East London with my suz.I left 3 am in the morning and arrived in East London that night at 8pm. Eish !!!!! 17 hrs. I remember averaging about 60 km / ph .Most hills it was 1st and 2nd gear, the bike could only do 80 km/ph on the flats with no wind flat out.I had 2 heat seizes where the bike cut out and after free wheeling down the hill (kei cuttings) and at the bottom of the hill put ignition on and 5th gear fire it up and away i go again. There were no freeways those days ,and petrol for the entire trip there cost me R5 including a burger in Umtata. !!!! That was a trip i will never forget.

Dam - this learning to ride really sucks! I think my co-ords are screwed - in fact I know they are! My shoulders are so sore from being tensed. I can ride perfectly on a straight road (with George as my pillion!), and windy windy’s, but lo and behold, the minute I need to turn I get all nervous and make stupid mistakes. Read More

My eyes ungum themselves and I stare blankly at the darkened ceiling. I feel the oppressive, clammy air and the thought flits through my mind - fuck, it’s still raining. There are only two decent corners on the way to work and in the quest to keep my tyre profile nice and round with that rough smear right to the edge, I need to hit them hard and fast. Read More
